A Dog Called Chancer...

I LOVE my monthly Marie Claire magazine, it always has the right blend of fashion, amazing spreads and thought-provoking articles. In this months May issue an article by Melissa Fay Greene really inspired me.

Wonder Dog tells the story of a couple in the US who adopted two children from an orphanage in Russia. However months later the young boy they adopted, Iyal, began to show signs of FASD, Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.

When Iyal was nine years old and doctors said there was nothing they could do to help him, Iyal's adoptive-mother called 4 Paws. 4 Paws is a non-profit organization which has dogs from breeders, shelters and donated dogs. The dogs receive 500 hours of training and are specially trained for their owners needs. In Iyal's case, a golden retriever named Chancer found him.

When Iyal sat on the floor crying and screaming Chancer would nuzzle his nose through Iyal's crossed arms and lick his face, stopping the tantrum. Chancer can even sense the tantrums before the start.

If you don't read anything else today just read this article, sometimes people just don't realize how much animals can change the lives of humans.
